On Top of the World

The grounds of the Parkridge Center Corporate Campus in Reston once provided the setting for several works of public art presented at the Outdoor Sculpture Invitational that was on view from August 1991 to June 1992. On Top of the World depicts a colorful but abstracted figure in a tall hat seeming to balance atop a frame orb. Created by artist Richard Felix Dennis, this steel sculpture stands at a modest twenty-one inches yet has an incredibly strong presence. It was one of the original works – no longer on display – presented at the Outdoor Sculpture Invitational in 1991. It was one of many sculptures installed on the lawns of the Parkridge Corporate Campus as a way to bring attention to the site. Although met with criticism by business owners and employees when it was first constructed, On Top of the World soon came to be regarded as a landmark within the office park.
