In 2008, Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts & Sciences chose muralist Mike Pilato for its Artist-in-Residency program to help the sixth graders paint a mural upon the exterior wall in the sculpture garden. The design for the mural—which reflects the values of all HWES students—was created by Pilato and included elements, concepts, and people with special meaning to the students, united under arches made up of the students’ handprints. Reston founder Bob Simon also included his handprint on the mural. Outdoor Wall Mural’s design was inspired by a fellow beloved 6th grader who had brain cancer at the start of the project. Sadly she passed away towards the project’s completion, and a candlelight vigil was held in front of the mural in her honor.
