The Building

Gonzalo Fonseca
1966 | Wood

Affectionately dubbed the Building by the children who embraced its playful forms this unplanned sculpture was inspired by leftover wood Fonseca found around the construction site during the time he spent creating the molded concrete works for Lake Anne Village Center (Sun Boat, North Shore Drive Underpass and Pylon). The vertical grouping of wood constructions sat in the small square across the inlet from Fonseca’s Sun Boat. The work incorporated many of his signature elements including whimsically populated niches, angular steps & other evocative details that animate surfaces. The Building was repaired in October 1977, but the wood eventually deteriorated. Nevertheless, Fonseca left a blueprint with the exact specifications for the sculpture that could eventually be recreated.
