Moorings Drive Underpass

Olin Russum
1967 | Ceramic mosaic

Maryland artist Olin Russum was a noted potter and sculptor best known for his large- scale ceramic murals and sculptures installed in public schools, restaurants, and banks throughout the Baltimore-Washington region. He was commissioned by Reston planners to invigorate the wing walls of the Moorings Drive underpass with a two-part ceramic tile mural of which only the right side remains. Like the sculptural environment created by Gonzalo Fonseca for the North Shore Drive Underpass this work transforms what could otherwise be a forbidding tunnel into an engaging work of art. The mural is said to capture an abstract representation of the original map of Reston.
