Continuum
Valerie Theberge
2020 | Wall: Glass, mirror, mortar, and grout; Bench: Polystyrene, fiberglass mesh, mortar, glass, and grout
Mosaic artist Valerie Theberge created Continuum to adorn a concrete wall that fronts a pedestrian walkway. Theberge said she wanted the installation to “harmonize” with the surrounding area. The artwork resides alongside a busy corridor that borders the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station and neighborhoods home to both residences and businesses. She wanted the complex geometric designs to speak to the architecture, the colors corresponding with the building it adorns, and its neighbors. Theberge created the artwork to be enjoyed by pedestrians and cyclists to and from work and the shops, designing it to become a pleasant part of someone’s daily commute, “I wanted something you could look at over and over.” The artist also created a mosaic bench located at the main entrance of the apartment complex.
