These two metal orbs, located on the southwest and northwest corners of the Market Street and Presidents Street intersection, are whimsical interpretations of an armillary sphere—a kind of astronomical model consisting of a celestial globe and a map of constellations. They were commissioned by Reston Town Center Association and designed by RKTL, the architects of the first phase of Reston Town Center, as part of the original decorative elements of the site and to provide a more dramatic entry into the Town Center as well as invite pedestrians into and along the upper end of Market Street. The sphere on the northwest corner was removed in 2018 in preparation for the construction of the Leidos building.
