In 2008, Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences (HWES) chose muralist Mike Pilato for its Artist-in-Residency program to help the sixth graders paint a mural for the exterior wall of the sculpture garden. Pilato designed the mural to visualize HWES values including elements, concepts, and people with special meaning to the students, united under arches made up of the student handprints. Reston founder Robert E. Simon, Jr. also included his handprint on the mural.  The design was also inspired by a beloved 6th grader who was diagnosed with brain cancer at the start of the project. Sadly she passed away towards the project’s completion; a candlelight vigil was held in front of the mural in her honor.
