Pylon stands just beyond The Underpass beside the pathway, a curved concrete cylinder etched by the wooden forms used to create it, and is itself a study in solids and voids that draw the passerby to touch its rough texture or peer through it to glimpse the view. As with all of Fonseca’s concrete sculptures in this area, Pylon does not make a point of jumping out at the viewer. With its light mossy coloring and weathered surface, this sculpture has become part of the landscape. However, its open center and carved sides encourage exploration and direct contact with the work. Its humility belies its size—the sculpture stands to the side, equally willing to host eager explorers or blend in as part of the underpass scenery.
