The Way to Be
2009 | Acrylic on reclaimed wood
A simple, green tower reminiscent of both Buddhist temples and play equipment. The three sculptures were created by artist Mike Shaffer who believes his childhood passion for building architectural structures with colorful block and Lincoln Logs largely influenced the projects. He describes to GRACE Arts his adoration for The Way to Be: “I like its openness and the way the bright crisscrossing beams and boards are able to define the space in which the whole work resides without completely separating it from its surroundings.” In addition to its life in the “gaps” exhibition, The Way to Be was included in POP-UP@SOMA, a temporary sculpture exhibition in the empty South Market Building on Explorer Street in Reston in 2010.
